Coding for Youth with Autism – Pathway Out of Poverty

In January 2019, Families Helping Families NOLA developed Coding for Youth with Autism – Pathway Out of Poverty, a win-win-WIN program to train and place transitioning youth with autism in meaningful and well-paying in-demand workforce occupations.

The Coding for Youth with Autism program has four overarching goals:

Decrease social isolation

Increase wage-earning potential

Meet identified community and workforce demand

Secure meaningful employment

Program Details

This program is designed specifically for youth on the Autism Spectrum who are ready to transition to work, Families Helping Families NOLA’s Coding Career Pathway provides support services to launch participants into a range of careers in the coding and computer field.

The assessment readiness program utilizes an assessment tool developed in conjunction with LSU Health- Human Development Center that is unique to students with autism and who are interested in a technology career pathway. The model assesses each student as they matriculate through the program and aims to ensure the greatest chance of success for students.

Once application has been received, an interview/screening will be set up.  Once it is determined that this program is a good fit, the applicant will choose which training to attend from the following FHF partners:

FHF NOLA’s Coding Support Services:

  • Orientation and screening
  • Coordinating financial support with Louisiana Rehabilitation Services
  • Referral to a Coding Training Program
  • Tutoring Support
  • Workplace skills training
  • Internship connections
  • Job placement and support

Why Participate in the Program?

  • Nearly half of 25-year-olds diagnosed on the autism spectrum have never held a paying job.
  • People on the autism spectrum often have neurological strengths in the areas of logic, data organization, and visual learning used in computer coding.
  • Over 700,000 tech jobs in the USA are unfilled. Many are in the Greater New Orleans area
